CHECK OUT OUR AWESOME EAST CAMPUS EVENT ON APRIL 5!
"Green for College Park II: Making East Campus A Beast Campus"

Up until last fall, the University of Maryland was going to be partnering with the developer Folger-Pratt to build the East Campus Development.  This development was slated to be a 38 acre $900 million dollar redevelopment of the university-owned acres across Route 1 and along Paint Branch Parkway.  However, because of economic difficulties, Folger-Pratt pulled out.  Now the university is looking to move forward with a new developer, and do the project piece by piece rather than all at once.

UMD for Clean Energy thinks the university should make the East Campus development one of the greenest in the entire state of Maryland.  Although there were some environmental merits in the project Folger-Pratt was going to build, we feel that as a whole the development was not ambitious at all from an environmentalist's perspective.  In addition, the standards we hold ourselves to in 2010 are worlds apart from what they were in 2006  For a university that has recently committed to a Climate Action Plan to reduce our emissions 50% by 2020 and go carbon neutral by 2050, anything but the best is unacceptable.  East Campus can't just be an improvement on the status quo, it needs to set a new standard for green building and urban planning.

That's why we are organizing an event on April 5th, 2010 to bring together experts on green building, storm water management, smart growth, and transit oriented development.  We want to share a vision with the College Park community, students, and the university administration on what green development practices East Campus could and should have to make it the gold-standard in Maryland.
